Restoring 60 Year Old Family Kitchen Table & Chairs
by Chris Fick

My father purchased this kitchen table and chairs in 1950 and it has served his family of seven well during the past 60 years, but it's time for a top down refinishing project.

I'm using a Skil Octo sander with 60 grit to remove the old finish and any scuffs and dings in the wood. Next I will use a 120 grit and then a 220 grit to get the surface smooth and ready for stain.

After researching online I decided not to use a chemical stripper for health and environmental reasons.

I will be using an oil based stain, tung oil, and a furniture wax to finish off the project.

Let me know if you have any questions or comments about this project.

Thanks,

Chris Fick

After about two hours of sanding with the Skil Octo and two sheets of the 60 grit.

After another two and a half hours of sanding I finished the two wings, all the edges, the underside of the center leafs, and 80% of the legs with the 60 grit. Next the underside of the wings, the rest of the legs, and then onto sanding with the 120 grit and 220 grit. Looking GOOD!

(more to come)
